Charisma Secrets That Boost Your Profile & Success Rate in Executive Interviews [EXPERT GUIDE]

Don't Overlook Your Attire, It Matters

Your leadership, presence, and influence are shaped by how you communicate, including your attire. In fact, your attire should be strategically planned for online or in person interviews. We could elaborate further on this but the fastest way to get across what to wear is to download our Workwear White paper.

workwear white paper

The Workwear White Paper covers the most current research on corporate attire so that you can make better choices about the degree of formality you should go for. So, if you're wondering if crocs and jeans will plummet your authority or you're in split minds about whether to wear business formal or business casual, this guide will make things clear so that you can make the best decisions about how you communicate the best impressions, especially ready for your next job interview.

Speak in Cadence

So very few people think about the turn, tone, and rhythm of their speech patterns. And this ability to strategically position eloquent statements, power-infused tonality, and rapport-building emotional cues through the sonic color of your words is a vital determinant that can set you apart from the rest. When we speak aloud, we form words that are built around sound. You must consider how the sound and flow and rhythm and meter of your speech registers for your listener in all cases, but most importantly in a job interview. I advise you to work with an expert to refine your ability to gain cadence, especially when nervous, under pressure, or in a position where you need to showcase and sell your expertise and skill.

Use Creative Conversation Strategies to Build Rapport

You won't be the only candidate that the panel meets, but you can be the only candidate that forms the most memorable and positive impression. To achieve this you will need to explore and build your capacity to engage using creative conversation strategies. Most job applicants appear in panel interviews and present in a very similar, neutral and automatic manner. Using an overly formal, analytical, structured approach to all questions is common behavior at the expense of showing what your competitors lack- creativity and visionary language that inspires. You need to draw on a strategic approach that makes the conversations that you have with the panel incredibly memorable and the best way to do this is to learn proven rhetorical devices that influence listeners.

At Cadenza we train applicants to simulate and respond to stimuli in interviews so that they can respond to questions in a highly bespoke, personable and authentic manner while still sound confident.

Abandon the use of STAR frameworks because everybody is using this approach and it results in communication that comes across as very formulaic. You need an upgrade if you want to outperform, especially now.

CADENZA

One of the greatest challenges for hiring panels is to get a true sense of who the person they are meeting really is. Too many applicants rely on mechanical automatic structures and triggering cues of "I've got everything together and I'm a perfect person" that actually make the panel more susceptible to doubting the accuracy and veracity of the response. Creative conversation tactics are rare in everyday speech patterns and exchanges, let alone in the interview room. And this is one way you can outperform other candidates and successfully make for a memorable experience for the panel, raising the likelihood that you could be called back for the next round or ultimately get the role.

Use Metaphors & Analogies to Trigger Emotion, Connection & Cognitive Sophistication Bias

Most speakers these days are using too many filler words, repetitive vocabulary and corporate jargon, so here is where you can really stand out! Build your literary skills. and master the ability to use handmade metaphors and bespoke analogies that relate to your skill set, expertise, market needs and problems or complex themes. The ability to convey complex information simply will trigger cognitive sophistication bias- you'll appear even more capable.

When you're in an interview, you must be benefit-focused, and you must convey visionary and memorable exchanges that show that you can solve a problem best or come up with great ideas. Be agile and creative and stand out as cognitively sharp, clever, and diligent. These are big asks in a short exchange. Interviews typically are not very long, and you don't have a lot of time to showcase all these assets that the employer is looking for. But metaphors and analogies fast-track complex messages, breaking them into digestible, memorable, and emotion-fueled impressions.

Even the great writers spent hours playing with how figurative language was used in their drafts to produce the best metaphor for the moment. Politicians and presidents and emperors use speech writers for this. It is no small ask to develop your literary skills but with training you can progress faster and forward professionally.

Be Careful with Storytelling

There is a lot of talk and banter about storytelling and its power, especially on LinkedIn and all over the internet. Storytelling is incredibly powerful, but only if it's built and mapped according to a very solid understanding of the motive, the outcome, and the listener experience that you need to trigger. Furthermore, a good story is determined by its delivery. You must back the powerful storyline with strategic sound, vocal expression and a certain measure of the theatrical.

Because storytelling is being talked about so often, most people striving to use it are running the risk of learning some basics but not following an evidence-based approach to using stories. Stories must be built using a persuasive campaign approach.

So many of the "storytelling devices" or examples that you'll see in corporate literature and even in articles in Harvard Business Review and so forth, they're actually not stories. They're more case scenarios or verbal descriptions of a pilot-style study or a chronology or index list.

True storytelling builds emotion and triggers memory hooks. True stories when told, need an actor's skill to work.

Captivating stories run on a tight arc. There are also numerous variations available to how the same story can be told and you need to choose the right one.

As a word of caution, poor storytelling and ineffective triggering of the motive behind the story can do you more harm than good.

Don't feel discouraged from telling stories, but be diligent and discerning in the way in which you build up your storytelling skills.

Use Expertise Signalling Tactics

Competitive roles are sought-after and highly challenging to acquire and often it comes down to your capacity to successfully signal expertise.

Our plug and play structures at Cadenza build your skill to pack rich signals of your expertise into tiny time exchanges. With these resources you'll be able to convey your expertise using structures that show prediction, futurecasting, hypothesis, the ability to synthesize complex information and make it very clear for the panel. Expertise signalling must be deployed with a communication structure that is grounded in logical flow, tight voice tone, speech cadence, and rapport building.

Because if you go into the interview and you're focused on expertise signaling without considering the tone of the voice and rapport building at the same time while signaling your deep insights, confident delivery, using emotionally intelligent hooks in your conversational exchanges, you can come across as:

  1. arrogant,
  2. unconfident, like you're trying too hard, or,
  3. you can outshine the master or create envy and jealousy.

Expertise signalling must be handled with care in a very strategic approach so that it's not at the expense of the role.

Showcase your EQ

Successful candidates master the interview process often securing the role through their capacity to manage relationships in the interview by applying emotional intelligence. Interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence are in such high demand these days.

Let's step back a bit and consider why the workplace is fractured. Engagement and productivity are breaking apart in numerous industries. Trust is at the lowest level between the board and middle management, middle management and employees, and vertically upwards as well.

So when you go into a job interview, especially if it's a leadership role, you need to show emotional intelligence, not just to convey,

"I'm a kind, nice person".

That's not enough. Because of course you are. You need to convey,

"I have the capacity to read people and respond accordingly in a way that builds engagement, influence around the organizational objectives and productivity."

And a lot of people are answering using an analytical approach, like they may give information about data and metrics such as, "We increased customer engagement by this percent".

Instead you need to showcase at a team level, at a collaborative level.

Use Leadership Signalling

Everyone's pretty ambitious these days to step into leadership positions and part of that is the state of the economy. The coin doesn't run as far as it used to and getting a position that's higher up in the ranks and further forward in the hierarchy tends to signal increased economic advantage.

To gain these roles, you need to work on your capacity to signal leadership potential.

Leadership communication signals are vast, varied, and concrete. There are many ways that you can signal engaging leadership styles, even if you haven't yet been appointed into a leadership position. But without a doubt, leadership signaling, when done effectively, raises the notion of you as the ideal candidate and plausible fit. If you're an emerging leader looking at building out your leadership communication skills, we have a dedicated Communication Class for Emerging Leaders for you that will get you started. You will learn the most practical career ascension formula, so that no time is lost in place of your career advancement.

Have a BonBon

Everybody likes something sweet from time to time. And there's nothing like sitting on a panel and interviewing over 30 people, maybe less, maybe more, whatever it is, even a small handful of people, to lose energy It's incredibly exhausting. For this reason, when you enter that interview room, you must have a bonbon up your sleeve.

You must have something to sweeten, engage, stimulate, and motivate your panel in a scintillating manner. Obviously, it's not a real sweet or candy, but it must be a very bespoke bonbon. It could be some unique strength that nobody else has. It could be something startling and incredible that only you could do. Please ensure you have a bonbon.

Demonstrate Manager Training

So few leaders are trained for the position. Verified people management and leadership communication skills are rare among candidates. If you can go into a job interview and showcase that you have done a bespoke personalized program that has built up your communication, speaking and leadership skills, you will be at a huge advantage because you'll be able to articulate various notions, principles, and concepts that relate to the industry and the role at hand.

You must demonstrate that you have the tools and communication style to engage the new team and build trust. And if you can do this in the interview, it's likely the role is almost halfway yours.

Effective coaching techniques boost manager performance from 20 to 28%. So in training your communication style, your voice tone, your presenting and pitching and team engagement skills as a communicator, you will see a growth in outcomes, engagement and productivity in the team because of your leadership influence by anywhere between 20 to 28% at least.

You must demonstrate that you have the tools and communication style to engage the new team and build trust. And if you can do this in the interview, it's likely the role is almost halfway yours.

Responsive Interview Preparation Must Take Into Account the State of the Workplace

Most employees are feeling the burn and not just in their pockets.

Each year, Gallup releases the State of the Global Workplace Report, designed to represent the collective voice of the global employee. Here are my key interpretations, based on insights from the 2025 report, that reveal findings that matter to you, no matter where you fit in the workplace hierarchy.

Divisions in all Levels of Organisations

Employees and executives “seem farther apart than they have been in years, managers are handed an almost impossible task of making it all work in the real world.” (Gallup report, 2025).

Not only that, leaders are not staying long in roles, moving quickly to other departments, positions, or companies, which makes trust a rare commodity.

Global Employee Productivity fell

Drops in employee engagement globally have inflicted the world economy with a US$438 billion loss in productivity.

The key cause is attributed to manager engagement.

Manager engagement plummeted

Managers are now feeling increased compounded pressure from the executive suite and employee expectations. Only the manager worker category has experienced the most decline; two groups of managers have shown the largest drop in engagement:

    • Young managers (under 35 years)- a drop of 5% points
    • Female managers- a drop of 7% points

Worker Wellbeing is at it's lowest

Worker wellbeing has continued to decline, matching engagement drops only seen during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
